Preparing Your Vehicle For Transport

How to Get your car ready to ship

Knowing how to transport a car properly will significantly minimize your risk of damage during the
shipping process. While only a very minimal number of vehicles are damaged during transport
industry-wide, it is important to minimize this risk by taking specific preliminary steps so that your auto
shipping experience is an enjoyable one.

Before your auto transport, you should take precise note of all existing damage to your vehicle. This
includes any cosmetic damage, scratches, dents, etc. These notations should be accompanied by
photographs and verified by your auto transporter.

All personal items, both on the interior and exterior of the vehicle, should be removed prior to
shipment. This especially includes any toll or parking passes as they could be charged multiple times
along the auto transport route. Custom equipment such as stereos, video & GPS equipment, etc.,
should also be removed before shipping a car so that it is less likely to be targeted for theft. Remember,
your transporter is responsible for the safe transfer of your vehicle, not your personal possessions.

Unless otherwise agreed upon, it is to be assumed that your vehicle is in good and operable condition.
Ensure that any mechanical problems are disclosed to your auto carrier and include any special notes
that will be helpful during the auto transport process.

For further protection while shipping a car over a long distance, check that the vehicle’s exterior is fully
secured. Fold in side mirrors, retract antennas, remove any exterior accessories, and ensure that all
windows and removable tops are fully closed. Additionally, be sure that your car alarm is disabled or
that your auto transporter has instructions on how to do so if necessary. Taking these few extra steps
can mean the difference between a timely or a delayed auto transport delivery.

Finally, keep in mind that the best planning includes good communication. If any questions arise about
preparing your vehicle for shipment, ask your transporter. Keep your car transport experience as worry-
free as possible by being proactive and preparing ahead of time.
